Pop of Pink Granny Cowl

As I mentioned several months ago (OK, maybe last year) on Instagram, I finally have a granny cowl pattern to share with everyone. I've only worked it through in my head, so the written pattern hasn't been tested, but hopefully it is error-free. If not, please let me know, and I will revise when I can...it has been a busy 2018 already...work, kids, life. 

I hope you enjoy it. I use mine every day in these winter months. After many washes, it has loosened quite a bit, but I like the look and coverage still. The pink one I just finished for my daughter :) She is a skier and it fits snugly over her face from neck to nose.

Finished size: 18” circumference

(one size fits most)

Materials: (Any worsted weight yarn)

Universal Classic Worsted Yarn

(80% Acrylic, 20% Wool) 3.5 oz

Red Heart with Wool

(80% Acrylic, 20% Wool) 3.5 oz

A - 1 skein pink (light) (Universal)

B - 1 skeins gumball (medium) (RH)

C - 1 skeins pixie (dark) (RH)

D - 1 skein aran or white (Universal)

Crochet Hook - Size I - 9mm

Large Eye Blunt/Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations: 

sl st slip stitch 

ch chain 

sc single crochet 

hdc half double crochet 

dc double crochet 

tr triple crochet 

dtr double triple crochet 

sk skip

Directions: 

Granny square 1 (make 2)

With A, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring. 

Rnd 1: Ch 3 [counts as first dc here and throughout], 2dc into ring, ch 2, (3dc in ring, ch 2) 2 more times; join with sl st in top of beg ch. Slip across remaining stitches to corner space.

Rnd 2: Join B in any corner space. Ch 3, (2dc, ch 2, 3dc) in same ch 2 sp (corner made),  (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) in next ch 2 sp; rep 2 more times; join with sl st into top of beg ch 3. Slip across remaining stitches to corner space.

Rnd 3: Join C in any corner space. Ch 3, (2dc, ch 2, 3dc) in same space (corner made), *3dc in next space, (3dc, ch2, 3dc)*. Repeat *to* 2 more times, 3dc, sl st into top of beginning ch 3. Slip across remaining stitches to corner space.

Note: If you are whip stitching add one more round with D. If you are joining-as-you-go, continue on to granny square 2.

Granny square 2 (make 2)

With C, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring. 

Rnd 1: Ch 3 [counts as first dc here and throughout], 2dc into ring, ch 2, (3dc in ring, ch 2) 2 more times; join with sl st in top of beg ch. Slip across remaining stitches to corner space.

Rnd 2: Join B in any corner space. Ch 3, (2dc, ch 2, 3dc) in same ch 2 sp (corner made),  (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) in next ch 2 sp; rep 2 more times; join with sl st into top of beg ch 3. Slip across remaining stitches to corner space.

Rnd 3: Join A in any corner space. Ch 3, (2dc, ch 2, 3dc) in same space (corner made), *3dc in next space, (3dc, ch2, 3dc)*. Repeat *to* 2 more times, 3dc, sl st into top of beginning ch 3. Slip across remaining stitches to corner space.

Join-as-you-go

Alternate granny squares 1 and 2 as you use the join-as-yo- go method.

Tip: If you are using the join-as-you-go method, only do a half corner (ch3, 2dc) at the beginning of your last joining square. You will be joining this last square to the first three, but on the opposite side you will be joining it to your first square in the same round.

Finishing: 

Rnd 4 Continue with D (or join if you whip stitched) and ch 2, hdc in same stitch and in every st around. Join with a sl st to top of beg ch. Cut yarn. Repeat this round on the opposite side.

Rnd 5 Join B and ch 2, hdc in same stitch and in every st around. Join with a sl st to top of beg ch. Cut yarn. Repeat this round on the opposite side.

Rnd 6 Join C and ch 2, hdc in same stitch and in every st around. Join with a sl st to top of beg ch. Cut yarn. Repeat this round on the opposite side.

Weave in all ends.

Finishing up a new daisy blanket

I am almost finished with a new pink daisy blanket I have been working on with a new customer over at my Etsy shop. She is a breast cancer survivor and is including the blanket in a daisy themed basket for a silent auction. She sent me her logo:

And I supplied a new version of the daisy based on her gerbera-type daisy used in the logo:

Ultimately, she went with the original daisy, but I really like how this on came out, and will definitely be using it in a new blanket.

BTW, the Get In Touch Foundation is a breast health nonprofit organization and the Get In Touch Girls' Program & Daisy Wheel teaches girls in grades 5-12 the importance of and how to do a breast self exam.

Monkey business (updated)

About a year ago, I created this monkey applique for a custom blanket. During some file clean up, I came across it, so I thought I would share for all of you monkey lovers. (I typed this up from scribbles, so I apologize if there are any errors. I'm still a-work-in-progress when it comes to writing patterns.)

I used worsted weight yarn and a size I hook.


Monkey face (see chart below):

ch 4 join to form ring
round 1: ch 2, 13 dc into ring, join with slip st
round 2: ch 2, 2 dc into each dc around join with slip st
round 3: ch 1, skip 1, 7 dc into next st, skip 1, slip st in next st, sc into next dc, skip 1 dc, 7 dc into next st, skip 1, slip st in next 2 sts; 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 trc in same st, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 trc in same st; 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, slip into beginning stitch 
round 4: 1 sc, 7 hdc, 1 sc, slip st, 1 sc, 7 hdc, 1 sc, slip st, 1 sc, 2 hdc, 2 hdc into next st, 8 hdc, 2 hdc into next st, 2 hdc, 1 sc, slip st to beg, leave long tail to attach

Dark brown head:

ch 4 join to form ring
round 1: ch 2, 13 dc in ring, join with slip st
round 2: ch 2, 2 dc into each dc around join with slip st
round 3: ch 2, *1 dc, 2 dc into next st * (repeat around from *)
round 4: ch 2, *2 dc, 2 dc into next st * (repeat around from *)

Ears (make 2):

ch 4 join to form ring
round 1: ch 2, 6 dc into ring (do not join) ch 1 turn, sc in each, leave long tail to attach

Eyes (make 2):

ch4 join to form ring
round 1: ch 1, 10 sc into ring, slip to join, leave long tail to attach

Sew eyes to face with tail. Embroider smile of your choice. Center (pin if you like) and sew face to head. Attach ears by sewing them with long tail to either side of head. (I also did another option with a pink ear. You can create this by using the ear pattern with a smaller hook)

UPDATE 1/2/16: After several years, I have finally gotten back to monkey and Round 3 issues. As I mentioned in my original post, this was from my chicken scratch notes. I apologize for any frustrations the added stitches may have caused, but it is free after all :) I wish I could devote more time to this blog, but family and work keep me busy!

I charted out the face below, removed the extra stitches and hopefully, it will be a better experience!

Photo tutorial of how to create the daisy

To beg - chain (ch) 5 and join to form a circle

Round 1: ch 2, 11 double crochet (dc) into ring

Round 2: change to new color with a slip st in any space between dc; ch2, * 3 treble (tc) in same space; remove crochet hook and insert it into the top of the first tc; hook and pull last tc through first loop - petal made - ch2 * and repeat * to *. make 11 more petals in this fashion

Slip st into first petal and finish off.

Sorry I didn't include the steps and photos side-by-side, but I thought by including some photos, you could at least have a gauge for how it should look! Good luck!
