Monkey business (updated)

About a year ago, I created this monkey applique for a custom blanket. During some file clean up, I came across it, so I thought I would share for all of you monkey lovers. (I typed this up from scribbles, so I apologize if there are any errors. I'm still a-work-in-progress when it comes to writing patterns.)

I used worsted weight yarn and a size I hook.

Monkey face (see chart below):

ch 4 join to form ring

round 1: ch 2, 13 dc into ring, join with slip st
round 2: ch 2, 2 dc into each dc around join with slip st
round 3: ch 1, skip 1, 7 dc into next st, skip 1, slip st in next st, sc into next dc, skip 1 dc, 7 dc into next st, skip 1, slip st in next 2 sts; 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 trc in same st, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 trc in same st; 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, slip into beginning stitch
round 4: 1 sc, 7 hdc, 1 sc, slip st, 1 sc, 7 hdc, 1 sc, slip st, 1 sc, 2 hdc, 2 hdc into next st, 8 hdc, 2 hdc into next st, 2 hdc, 1 sc, slip st to beg, leave long tail to attach

Dark brown head:

ch 4 join to form ring

round 1: ch 2, 13 dc in ring, join with slip st
round 2: ch 2, 2 dc into each dc around join with slip st
round 3: ch 2, *1 dc, 2 dc into next st * (repeat around from *)
round 4: ch 2, *2 dc, 2 dc into next st * (repeat around from *)

Ears (make 2):

ch 4 join to form ring

round 1: ch 2, 6 dc into ring (do not join) ch 1 turn, sc in each, leave long tail to attach

Eyes (make 2):

ch4 join to form ring

round 1: ch 1, 10 sc into ring, slip to join, leave long tail to attach

Sew eyes to face with tail. Embroider smile of your choice. Center (pin if you like) and sew face to head. Attach ears by sewing them with long tail to either side of head. (I also did another option with a pink ear. You can create this by using the ear pattern with a smaller hook)

UPDATE 1/2/16: After several years, I have finally gotten back to monkey and Round 3 issues. As I mentioned in my original post, this was from my chicken scratch notes. I apologize for any frustrations the added stitches may have caused, but it is free after all :) I wish I could devote more time to this blog, but family and work keep me busy!

I charted out the face below, removed the extra stitches and hopefully, it will be a better experience!

As always, thanks for stopping by!

    1. You are so welcome fantail. I did not have time to double check all stitches from my scribbles, so I hope everything is correct. Good luck! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a note!

  6. LOVE this pattern! It came out perfectly! Just wondering though...where can I find the pattern for the actual afghan? It doesn't look hard but I've never done anything with a concentric square pattern.Thank you!

    1. Hi Michelle, Thanks for your note, and I'm sorry for taking so long to get back to you! The granny square blanket is very simple.

To begin: ch 4, slip st in 4th ch from hook to form ring.

Round 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 2, join with slip st in top of beginning ch.

Round 2: Join new color with slip st in any ch-2 corner space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) all in same ch-2 space, *[ch 1 (I omit the ch 1 throughout - personal preference), 3 dc in next ch-1 space] to corner ch-2 space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) all in corner ch-2 space; repeat to final corner, ch 1, join with slip st in top of beginning ch.

Keep repeating Round 2 with a new color until you reach your desired size.

For edging, I usually ch1 and sc in each st around, then ch 2 and dc in each sc around for a nice simple, but finished, edge.

      I hope that helps!

    2. My mom and I are trying to do this pattern and are confused on round 3 and 4 of the face... Is there some stitches missing in round 4? Please help if you can :)

  7. Quick question - do your stitches show through to the back when you attach the monkey to the afghan? How do you keep them from showing?

    1. Hi Emily, I take a little care and weave the tail into the "bumps" of the nearest 3dc shells as well as into the stitches on the top of the blanket, so that they are not seen from the back. Of course when I hit the areas with the same color yarn, it's much easier. The stitches hide very well, it just takes extra time and patience. However, I think if you sew your long tail through each loop of the monkey very neatly - keeping a closer watch on the back - I don't think your stitches would look "messy" on the back as long as your they are small, uniform and tidy. I hope that makes sense.

  8. Hi. I want to make this monkey to applique onto a baby hat size 3-6 months. How would I go about making the pattern smaller? It is so cute! Thanks for sharing!

    1. You could try using sport weight yarn and a smaller hook (I used a size I) - that would reduce the size significantly. You could also try switching out the dc for a hdc.

  10. Hi Laura. I am having problems on then monkey face. I am doing it how I think the pattern means but it doesn't come out right so I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I got round 1 and 2 and in round 3 i got from the ch 1 to the second of the 7 dc sk 1, sl. When it says sl in the next 2 sts does that actually mean sl in the next 2 sts or do you sl in the next st and then repeat the 7 dc and sl in the next stitch. I tried both ways and continued on each time but it either way it just doesn't look like the picture. I hope my question makes sense.

    1. I also, am having trouble on the face. Particularly in round 2-4. Maybe there is a few stitches missing? When I work the face I always get what looks like an awkward four leaf squarish flower. Hopefully that's a decent visual.

    1. Hi thea, Thanks for your note. I used Caron One Pound yarn for this blanket (nutmeg, lace, leaf green and black). The light green is Lion Brand Vanna's Choice (sweet pea).

  17. that is a great pattern! Thank you. Could you give me some guidance on how to increase the size of the monkeyface - like say double or triple this size. I see that row four ends at 39 stiches Row one has 13 is it a matter of increasing by 13 next few rows similar to what we do for a round?

  18. I tried this patern over and over and I am stuck on the Monkey face Rounds 3 and 4 also.

  19. I am also having a problem with Rounds 3 and 4 of the Monkey face, after many many tries. Also, this seems to be very small, not what is pictured. I am an experienced crocheter and would love to make this Monkey face for a toddler blanket I am making for my grandson. I agree with other commenters that maybe some stitches are missing. I've noticed that no answer has been provided to the commenters regarding this problem with the monkey face. I really love this pattern and hope you can clear up this problem and maybe re-write it so it will come out as your picture does. Thank you.

  22. Okay I didn't want to post this were everyone can see but maybe everyone can help. I am having issues on the monkeys face I did the seven double crochets for the eyes now I keep getting stuck after that doing two slip stitches in the next two got that. It's the 1 sc, 1hdc, 1dc, 2trc in the next st is that literally want all those stitches in the same stitch and after the 2trc it says 1dc 1hdc 1sc do those need to be in the same stitch? To me if they are all in one stitch then the two slip stitches in the next two stitches then repeating the previous pattern it doesn't seem to fit all the way around back to the start for the next row.
The last row on the monkey face doesn't make a lot of sense either there doesn't seem to be enough stitches to make it come out the right way.
Do you have like a video at lest for the monkey face the head and ears are easy it's just the last two rows on the face that are causing issues

  25. Hello, lovely monkey face, I want to use it for my twin great-nephews. Please let me know if the stitches are US or UK names. I can work in either as long as I know. Cheers.

  26. I just repeated what it said in round 3 after this point where it says:
Slip stitch into next 2 stitches.....

1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 trc in same st, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 trc in same st; 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, slip into beginning stitch.
I didn’t need to do round 4 at all.
This seemed to finish it off well.
    I hope that helps.
