A rose for the rose blanket

This is the rose I made that I'll be adding to my rose baby blanket:

Here's the pattern I used:

Begin by ch4, slip stitch in first ch to form a ring

Round 1:
*1 sc in ring ch3* repeat 3 times; finish with sl st in first sc from beg round

Round 2:
In every chain space: 1 sl st, 5 dc and 1 sl st to form three petals

Round 3: (working behind petals)
ch1, work *1 sc around the base of first sc from round 1, ch4, 1 sc at middle of first petal, ch4* repeat around; finish with slip stitch into first sc from beg of round

Round 4: (I used two colors; this is where I joined 2nd color with a sl st into any ch space)
In every chain space: 1 sl st, 6 dc, 1 sl st (6 petals)

Round 5: (working behind petals)
ch1, work *1 sc around the base of first sc from round 3, ch4, 1 sc at middle of first petal, ch4* repeat around; finish with slip stitch into first sc from beg of round

Round 6:
In every chain space: 1 sl st, 7 dc, 1 sl st (6 petals)

Cut and fasten or leave long tail to sew into project.

  3. Hi, your work is beautiful! Your colors are great! Your pink and orange granny squares made me spend a fortune in the local yarn shop to make one for myself. It will be washable wool. One question, in your tutorial you do not put a chain between the three doubles on each side. All the other instructions I have seen call for a chain. Is this the way you do all of your granny's?

Also, do you share your pattern for the flower granny?

Thanks for all your great work, I do not know how you get so much done in a day. When I had children at home I would never have been able to make blankets to sell and write a blog! You must not sleep much!

    1. Hi Evelyn, Thanks so much for your nice post. You're right - it's tough to do much of anything with the kids! I get the majority of my work done at night time and any time I can steal away. I also do some freelance graphic design if you can believe it - that was my occupation before children - so I'm on the computer working too. Let's just say it's a full day!

I've always worked my granny squares in this fashion. Sometimes I'll throw in a hdc shell and add a chain or two, but normally I do not put a chain between the 3dcs. I found the flower pattern in a book called "Beyond the Square Crochet Motifs". It's an amazing book, well worth the cost (and Amazon has several used that are like new). If you have an email address, I could email you the flower pattern.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    2. Thanks for your quick reply, I have the book, is it Motif # 114? Past the flower, your square is not the same, how did you finish it? Also, How can I send you my email without posting it on line?
I still do not know how you get so much done!!!

    3. Hi again! Yes, it's motif #114, and I work it up the same through round 4 with the exception of ch 2 instead of ch 3 in corners (obviously, I'm not a big chain-er! I guess I prefer a "tighter" space). If you look at round 4, it's just the beginning of a basic granny square pattern, so instead of using their round 5, just keep on with your simple 3dc, corner, 3dc around as you would a regular granny square. Make sense?

  5. Hi thank you for the pattern! My rose did not curl up like yours. It is more flat and just looks like a plain flower. Any suggestions?

    1. Sometimes I pull the center beg circle tight with the tail to pull the petals in. You could also try leaving a long tail, weaving it through the double crochets of the outer petals (that's how I usually weave in anyway!), and pull snugly. Hope that helps!

  6. Wow! Your blog is amazing and beautiful. This tutorial didn't make sense to me, however, until i watched YouTube tutes of other, similar flowers. It would be so helpful (especially for newbies like me) to have some kind of picture instructions on this. It's such a unique and beautiful flower. Thanks for all you do! You are very inspiring!

  7. As always I must say THANK YOU for your willingness to share free patterns for flowers!! With women such as your self I've learned to crochet many types of flowers without having to pay for pattern after pattern!!!!! It takes time and thought and talent to write your own patterns. Since I'm new to crochet I'm not able to figure out design, but I can follow a pattern you could charge money for this but you've offered it for free!! I'm into many forms of being a creator of handmade and we all know its moot cheap to do. I am greatful to women like you who have provided me with free patterns as I only have so much money to go around. Flowers are a great thing to make as there 100 things you can use them

    1. Hi Robin, Thank YOU for sending such a nice note. It made my day. I've been much busier with my "day job" and just being a Mom, so the blog has been moving along much s-l-o-w-e-r. I will keep trying to get new ideas and patterns up as I can find the time! I don't mind sharing, but it bothers me when people don't say "thank you". It's such a simple thing to do. I appreciate the thoughtfulness in your message. Have a wonderful weekend, hopefully with lots of crocheting :)

  8. Hello, the rose flower is beautiful. Do you have a tutorial on how to attach a granny square to the flower like in your picture? Thank you.

  9. I think in your Beautiful Rose Square you had a couple of "leaves" around the rose. I'm pretty good at following patterns, but not great at creating my own.
Also, It seems as if you simply attached roses to "plain" pink and white squares? In other words, the Rose is not an integral part of the square, but added afterwards? Is this correct? I'd love to be able to continue and finish square when Rose is complete. Is that possible? I haven't done the rose yet, so when I do it, I may try to continue and make square with the rose "built in".

I do want to THANK YOU for all you share with all of us. It means so much to so many of us who would not be able to crochet were it not for those, like you, who so share so freely with all off us. My budget would not allow for paying for all the patterns I might want to make if I had to pay for each and every pattern! THANK YOU SO MUCH! It really does matter to so very many of us! I've learned to crochet - and to increase my own abilities with the hook because of you and those like you who've explained so carefully for all of us!
